What are Gourmet Mushrooms?

The word “gourmet” is used to describe mushrooms that up until recently were not commonly found in grocery stores and more commonly only found growing wild. Some varieties are still only available if foraged in the wild due to the difficulties in learning how to cultivate them. The term gourmet broadly indicates edible mushrooms with bolder or more complex flavors than the common button varieties. The other class of mushrooms you might recognize are known as “medicinal mushrooms”. Medicinal mushrooms have strong medicinal properties and although they are edible, most are not that tasty therefore only used in extracts or powders. Some mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane and Maitake are considered both medicinal and gourmet due to their delicious flavor combined with strong medicinal properties. At Megan’s Mushrooms we choose to grow wood-loving species of gourmet mushrooms that are both delicious and nutritious.

Mushrooms contain many valuable nutrients including protein, vitamin B, C & D, folic acid, iron, fiber, selenium, glutathione, and ergothioneine. They are a healthy and tasty dietary source for essential antioxidants. These powerful antioxidants are said to play a crucial role in helping your body in a number of ways.

They are said to help in: -Fighting Oxidative Stress

-Decreasing Inflammation

-Protection against diseases
-Improvement of overall mental and physical health

How Mushrooms May Improve your Heath

Stress and Mushrooms

A new buzzword you may have heard in the health world is adaptogen. According to the dictionary an adaptogen is “any of various natural substances used in herbal medicine to normalize and regulate the systems of the body.” What it means to me is that every day and situational stress can take a hard toll on our bodies and we need to combat that by eating healthy and giving our bodies extra ammo to fight to stay healthy and feeling our best. There are many mushrooms including Lion’s Mane that have adaptogen properties. Some others include Reishi, Cordyceps, and Maitake. We want to bring those amazing mushroom properties to you and we want even non-mushroom lovers to have access to the powerful benefits of mushrooms so we now carry Mushroom Mountain MycoMatrix Extracts. These extracts are made “employing a proprietary triple extraction process pioneered at Mushroom Mountain that is a potent water soluble nutraceutical food and beverage supplement.” The folks at Mushroom Mountain are pioneers in the mushroom world and truly put a lot of love into their work.
